Modafinil is used to treat ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, and it works by promoting the release of norepinephrine and
dopamine into the brain, just like the other ADHD medications. These
chemicals increase focus, alertness and attentiveness. This drug is also
used as a treatment for narcolepsy and sleep apnoea.
The most common side effects include nausea, headache, nervousness, and
runny nose, difficulty sleeping and back pain. In rare cases, this drug
can cause serious side effects, such as chest pain, hives, depression,
difficulty swallowing and breathing, psychosis and hallucinations. It
can also cause mental problems, including suicidal thoughts.
